Bobby Tanzilo, author of The Milwaukee Police Station Bomb of 1917
In his new book, Milwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo focuses on an incident in
1917 when, on a chilly September day, the patriotic, pro-protestant
preaching of an Italian immigrant pastor, August Giuliani, ignited a
riot in Bay View. Two months later, in an apparent act of retaliation,
someone placed a bomb in Giuliani's Third Ward church. When a parishioner
took it to the Central Police Station, it detonated, killing nine
policemen and a civilian. The subsequent trial of the Bay View Italians
attracted national attention--Clarence Darrow and Emma Goldman were
involved in the case. Find out how the bombing and trial effected the
ethnic, religious, and economic tensions that were brewing in Milwaukee
in the early part of last century from Bobby Tanzilo at this free
