The novel, which is perfect for book clubs, explores themes of identity and place through the eyes of Kimberly Chang, a young Chinese girl who emigrates to Brooklyn with her mother. By day, the girl excels at school; by night, she works in a Chinatown sweatshop. Throughout her life Kimberly learns to translate not only her language, but herself back and forth between the worlds she straddles. Jean Kwok, who also emigrated from Hong Kong as a child, brings the common though rarely discussed story of so many immigrants to life on the page.
