Sebastian Junger
For one year (2007-2008) Sebastian Junger accompanied 30 men--a platoon--from the 2nd battalion of the U.S. Army as they fought their way through a remote valley in eastern Afghanistan. During the year, as he was by their side as bullets flew, men he knew were killed, and he himself was almost killed, he was given access and a level of candidness that few journalists ever attain. War is his account of his time there, a gripping, intense and honest narrative of combat, and the intense bond between platoon-mates. Junger set out to answer the question: why would a man throw himself on a hand grenade to save
other men he has known for probably only a few months? The answer is
elusive but profound, going to the heart of what it means not just to
be a soldier, but to be human.
Junger is also the author of The Perfect Storm and A Death in Belmont.
